Brendan Melchin & The Forward Bound

modern Jazz

Halifax, NS

The Forward Bound is a contemporary jazz ensemble based in Halifax, NS, whose purpose is to perform original compositions and arrangements by local, emerging artists. Led by drummer/principal composer Brendan Melchin, The Forward Bound consider jazz to be more an approach than a genre. Their music explores the balance between compositional structure and the improvisational spirit of jazz as it navigates various stylistic influences. A diehard fan and lifelong student of music, Melchin can’t help but let an array of genres poke through in his compositions, from traditional and modern jazz to improvised and chamber music to rock and funk.

His compositions have been performed on many stages including the Halifax Jazz Festival. In early 2018 Melchin attended a two-week residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, where he received guidance from noted musician/composers Dave Douglas and Caroline Shaw in developing a suite of modern big band music.

The Forward Bound released its debut album, The Absolute Now, in the summer of 2016. The following summer, the group performed a live-recorded, yet-to-be-released concert featuring new works by Melchin as well as works by his bandmates, each member an accomplished and emerging performer/composer in their own right. The group is currently working toward a performance of Melchin’s large ensemble works as well as to-be-announced performance dates for the summer and fall of this year with the six-piece ensemble.

Jazz is only a word. It is a word, though, that has provoked questions through generations of musicians. Is it a style or genre? An approach to music? A way of life? The Forward Bound like to ask these questions, and not answer them. They promise to deliver music that speaks for itself. Your ears, your hands, your feet, all your nerve endings and your whole mind will come alive, because this music is alive.
